Surf City
Riding the wave of surfing as a new Olympic sport, we’re transforming an abandoned industrial site at TraffordCity to deliver the North West’s first inland surfing venue. Modern Surf will bring health, fitness and outdoor activities to millions in Manchester and the region.
Industrial History
The two-hectare lagoon, powered by world-leading Wavegarden artificial wave technology, is surrounded by a cluster of buildings offering a surf academy, changing areas, as well as a clubhouse with bar, restaurant, shop and viewing terraces. With their jagged sawtooth roofs and monochrome steel cladding, these buildings reflect the industrial railway and canal heritage of Trafford.
Body and Mind
Modern Surf encourages people of all abilities to experience the joy of surfing and all its health benefits, both physical and mental. We’re enhancing the area with a generous interactive landscape perfect for getting active and relaxing. Visitors can explore the site, including unique competition-level spaces for skateboarding and bouldering.
“The evidence is clear – being in and near water boosts our mental and physical wellbeing. Modern Surf is bringing these benefits to Trafford, as well as creating a venue which could potentially produce a future Olympic gold medallist.”
