Cherwell District Council have invested in the overall development at Banbury Castle Quay, including a new public bridge, Premier Inn, Lidl, retail, leisure and car parks. The leisure block is the third and final block to open to the public. LJA have been the architects, responsible for the detailed and construction design of the architecture for this project.
The leisure block of the Banbury Castle Quay 2 (CQ2) development has been designed with the Light Cinema tenant in mind, initially for an entrance at Ground level with Foyer and 8 Cinemas on the 2nd Floor. However as the project progressed, partly due to the pandemic, and partly due to changing perceptions by the Light of what the cinema/retail offer to the public should be, there have been numerous changes and additions. A bowling alley taking up 3 retail units at ground level has been added to the Light’s demise, There is crazy golf at mezzanine level, and a retro gaming arcade on the ground floor, along with an outdoor terrace overlooking the canal. One of the cinema screens has been replaced by a climbing centre.
Throughout the development, it included wayfinding, landscaping, and a ‘sun terrace’ leading down to the canal.
